CGI is standing up an Artificial Intelligence Center of Excellence in Portugal, the company said in a statement distributed via PR Newswire. The center focuses on agentic and generative AI and goes live in early May, folded into a Portugal operation that already counts more than 2,000 CGI consultants.
The move reroutes existing capacity more than it builds a new one. CGI's Portugal unit already serves clients beyond its own market, supporting delivery into Finland, Germany, the Netherlands and the UK, and the new AI center inherits that cross-border scope rather than standing apart from it. Gonçalo Lança, CGI's senior vice-president for consulting delivery, said the center will help the firm "deliver AI-enabled transformation across industries worldwide" and let clients "improve operations, optimize decision-making, and realize measurable business value."
CGI is also formalizing partnerships with Portuguese universities and higher education institutions as part of the launch, aimed at growing technical talent locally. Carlos Lourenço, CGI's senior vice-president in Portugal, described the country as playing "a central role in CGI's global delivery network," positioning the new center as reinforcement of that role rather than a standalone bet.
The work already running out of Portugal spans banking software development, intelligent agents for service management, computer vision in healthcare, decision-support modeling and operational optimization for utilities, according to CGI. The announcement is light on staffing numbers for the new center itself and names no specific client contracts tied to it, framing capability and positioning ahead of delivery detail. CGI reported CA$15.91 billion in revenue for fiscal 2025 and employs 94,000 consultants globally.
